Tempera on gesso panel and canvas
This tempera painting, painted using traditional 16th century Italian tempera techniques, had been stored in a damp environment that had caused mould spots to appear on the surface. The mould, as well as a layer of surface dirt, had to be removed very carefully and mainly using dry cleaning methods because of the sensitivity of the paint surface to water and solvents.
